TIMES LIKE THESE (LONDON 7-7) Our respects and strong thoughts go out to those affected in any way by the events in London on the 7th July. At times like these the world shrinks; pockets of the earth focus mentally on a common need to experience the basic human emotions evoked by tragedy. We are for a period of time united in vulnerability, and in acknowledgement of how painful life can be. We are brought to the very centre of our being. We cannot escape our own mortality or thoughts of our limitations within the physical body. The global consciousness to some extent is levelled. At times like these we may have glimpses into other or deeper parts of our own unconscious and our own deeper feelings. John Done, the poet said ‘Every man’s death lessens me.’ At times like these we are brought to the central core of our being, we are riveted to the horror of a few minutes in one place. But those minutes reverberate into the ongoing process of time so that effects from those causes change things, individually and collectively,. Perhaps it is best to remember that no one event happens for just one reason. The human mind casts around for explanations or reasons, because without that we may feel we are going mad. The world to a large extent is at the edge of madness. But it will pass, as all things do. The individual choice is whether to subscribe to it. Whether to suspend belief in any power of good and to accept as supreme an overwhelming power of current evil. Decisions like these are sometimes taken in the moment - a powerful emotional force at points of crisis colours thought, belief and philosophy. Its best to remember that certain mindsets are able to influence the train of thought through to events for perhaps the remainder of our days. It is best to re-evaluate thought processes in the same way we check the bank statement on a monthly basis. At Cartouche we get very aggravated by the constant statements made by politicians and beauracrats etc in the wake of events like London 7/7. Useless, empty rhetoric stating the obvious and paying lip -service to official position does nothing to remedy, validate or change the world. The hypocrisy of some of it is beyond belief. Maybe remember that fanaticism and fundamentalism and fear (the three big f’s) lead to single devastating moments in time. Those three things are contagious - like a virus they spread and multiply, defying mere organisations or belief systems, and become the manipulating factors in human conscious action. It is impossible now to sort out the good guys from the bad guys. We may never know one from the other. If you lose someone you love in a brutal or hideously unexpected way in any era of life, their departure is a point of renewed consciousness, both for you and for them. The wheel is continuous, the wheel of rebirth and the wheel of karma within action. The deliberations of politicians and auditors address only one small part of the true cause and effect. We can never know another’s legacy or another’s debt or another’s real contribution to the dimension we call earth, because the story is too vast. At times like these we should concentrate on the value in the world - the one we live in, and the one ‘out there’ we only hear about second hand. In a world that has in many places lost a sense of value we have responsibility for our own soul, and that is enough. We cannot be our brother’s keeper, we cannot make our moral code a doctrine. We can only strengthen our knowledge of what benefits us most, and sharpen an awareness towards what really matters each day. Times like these shrink our priorities to a bite-size perspective of what is actually important. Here’s a little piece of philosophy sent in recently. This morning, if you woke up healthy, then you are happier than the
1 million people that will not survive next week. As somebody once said: Be realistic, be optimistic, be trusting or be wary, but be true to your own judgement. Best wishes from the team at Cartouche
