STIMULATION OR STAGNATION If we don’t challenge ourselves there is little doubt that life does it for us. If we don’t push back our own barriers and emerge from our comfort zones now and then life may become difficult: an accident with the car, a personal situation arising from nowhere, some bizarre problem keeping us awake at night. Maybe because higher self is pushing us to create new patterns of behaviour and consciousness? The understandable tendency after a certain age is to want to relax into the predictable, the acceptable and the limited. Whereas under pressure we are forced into further areas of knowing and awareness. Uncomfortable ones maybe, unattractive ones perhaps, but regions of our abilities and perception which mean expansion of self through endurance and experience of other life areas. It is abundantly clear to many of us in recent times that the opportunities for apathy are lessening. The periods of being able to dawdle about in the familiar and laze about in our armchairs (metaphorically speaking) while the hazards of the world happen to somebody else are increasingly thin on the ground. There is an acceleration and a quickening in life experience, and the loads we are expected to deal with emotionally and mentally are in direct proportion to the lessening of the physical toil demanded of the previous generations in the act of daily survival. The accent is on psychological and emotional endurance. The abilities needed to stay focused in a world of competitive restriction which our ancestors could not have wished for themselves or for us. These areas of extreme anxiety or distress are why we watch movies and read books. But then we meet limitation within those art forms and refuse to suspend disbelief, which means we have to create some alternative realities in our own dimension. The tendency to blame ourselves when we meet with accident or trauma is usually not proportionate to the amount of responsibility we need to take. And to not move beyond the anguish is to miss the next step required by the challenge. Astrologers see these occurrences as being the province of Saturn, Uranus or Mars; planets of energy strategies affecting physical life. Because it is as necessary that things breakthrough and break down as it is that they stay maintained or get created. We are generally afraid of radical change - unless we are controlling it and have called it up. When confronted with difficulty or challenge, uppermost on the agenda is emotion, of one sort or another, and that is what prevents us from being objective. Objectivity is a widened perspective, a province of the rational thought rather than the feeling nature. But the emotions and feelings are not easily going to give way to broader philosophy. Maybe that’s the role of people around us and supporting us - friend's and allies and so forth - to remind us of the rational outlook, the wider perspective, while we indulge in the gamut of our highly tuned feelings in some form of response which nourishes our soul. And surely that is why we have counsellors, and lawyers, and arbitrators and best friends! We may be forgiven for not always being philosophically on the ball, clued up to the latest way of slanting our problems. We are not our own spin doctors, and we are entitled to be childlike and insular and erratic and hysterical and all those other things - provided we come out the other end in time. If no-one ever made errors of judgement, if nothing ever went awry, we would sit forever wondering when the humdrum was going to end, and where the contrast lay to stop us stagnating. If you can't imagine it, just try thinking of a week without sleep,or the immediate environment with only three colours or two sounds! The monotony of things not happening is just as much to do with a lack of varying results as with lack of opportunity. Certainly being efficient and being powerful is not always getting it right! it is coping when we’re getting it wrong and letting life reveal what we maybe did not understand or recognize before L.S.
