RISK & CONFLICT Sometimes in the wonderful matrix of existence there are problems, situations and challenges which do not fall into the usual formulaic categories. The greater our level of achievements or success on the high wire the greater the dilemmas - both moral and otherwise. Life is a colourful canvas of surprises and disappointments, an ongoing road of discovery and excitement. We need discovery and we need excitement, and when we don’t need them any longer we stagnate, stay at home or try to totally control what comes in to us. And even then there are no guarantees. It’s all in the balance. The drama of life is the karma of individuals. There is risk and there is conflict, and there is no getting away from this if we are to gain self knowledge through integration with others, or advance through new circumstances. If you don’t eat life, life will eat you.! If we never take risks we are static, and we forget the value of choice, and it doesn't matter how well placed we are - it is not about comfort zones, it is about growth. Our need to grow is a product of our soul and it’s surge for expression through personality action or development. Stimulation and growth and experience are not just something we do to stave off boredom, although that is the way we will sometimes see it. So much of life is not clear cut. It is not a formalised process. It is personal, subjective and subject to the most weird and wonderful events out of which spring amazing situations. We are involved in our own individual drama - we are star or our own show - and we are part of a never ending spectacular stage of events, both our own and others. For that reason we have difficulties and situations that are not clear cut but need more understanding before they can be in any way labelled. The tendency in human nature is to box things off and to say: this falls under that heading and that falls under this heading. It is neat to try, but it in no way represents what life really is. Existence is an unfolding of flexible matter. Life is an inter-linking process; the colours merge and the lines are often blurred. The reason we listen to music, the reason we look at art, is because it most accurately represents how the soul feels things. It is closer to the way the unconscious perceives life than the every day flat dimensions. Art and harmony grow through conflict. This is the rule of the fourth ray. Action follows thought and growth follows stress. Otherwise we may not have evolved from the caves. Conflict and risk are part of the rich tapestry. In varying strengths and forms they are part of our daily round. And they are present in the strangest forms and the oddest situations. One hundred years ago or even two hundred years ago, the average person left their village or town only two or three times in a year, some only two or three times in a lifetime. Nowadays those same people are never at home. The world has shrunk, the mind has expanded and the psyche has been saturated with information, temptation and pressure to know. If everything becomes too much even the smallest decision becomes a risk. If the emotional boundaries are pushed and stretched even the safest association will present conflict. It is the way of the world, that which was yesterday's pleasure can become tomorrow’s chore. Trial and choice is what it’s all about. In the tarot this is represented by the ‘Wheel of Fortune’ arcanum number ten. Nothing stays the same, nothing is forever and nothing is infallible. Lyn Shea At Cartouche we have two speciality tarot spreads related to problem solving which may not fall under precise headings: ‘Tarot of High Risk’ for important decisions which may have high level implications and feel scary to the individual. ‘Tarot of Conflict’ for where there is disharmony, duality or ambivalence of any kind with someone else. ‘Life Issue’ and ‘General Tarot’ spreads may also be used for miscellaneous matters or subject which seem to fall outside of specific categories. So too may ‘One Card Solution’. But we urge you to avoid using too many spreads at once on the same subject unless you have clear understanding of how you are breaking them down or enlarging on the theme.
