FORTUNE TELLING
Explained ...
(by Lyn Shea)
Fortune telling is a very old concept. But this idea of the
future being out there somewhere and fully complete for us to walk into,
like a film set, needs some modification. Metaphysics teaches that the
future is not set. It is a moveable feast. It is ever present in potential.
Actions taken in the moment are deciding the future and therefore fortune
telling is based on the correct understanding of two things: what is
really happening in the present and the possible effects of this on
life ahead. When viewed in this way fortune telling is more to do with
influencing the present than with pulling a random set of circumstances
from some distant hazy landscape.
Nevertheless the power of fortune telling is very considerable. Its
possible to talk of the future and to auto-suggest (plant a seed or
an idea which then becomes reality). Some peoples' lives are completely
altered by what they are told during fortune telling, by fortune tellers
in general. They believe so strongly in what has been said that they
see no room for alteration, modification or deviation from the pronouncements
made.
The arguments about fate versus free will have been raging since ancient
days. Its is not a question easily answered. If you receive fortune
telling which is highly detailed in describing things which then come
to pass you are more than likely to subscribe to the theory of fate.
But if you are given options and choices for future dates (as in astrological
readings) you will not know whether what you chose was fated or simply
a product of your free will. Perhaps the answer is in both! Your fate
is within your capacity to use your free will.
For example if a fortune teller divines that you will move abroad to
open up a hotel, you may feel that this is what you are likely to do
and moreover what you wish to do. But you could by sheer obstinacy of
will go all out to prove both fortune telling and the theory of fate
wrong by staying at home and starting a green grocery business instead.
That is your free choice inspired by your free will. Neither of which
would exist in a world where fate was the only absolute denominator.
Unless of course the existence of free will is in itself an illusion.
Fortune telling relies heavily on the past and future being distinctly
separate. But the best way to know the future is to understand the past.
Because unless history is understood, both collectively and individually,
it becomes the future. Things happen because they can happen, not necessarily
because they are meant to happen. If things are always meant to happen
then fortune telling is definitely an acceptable premise. But this is
not the case and therefore fortune telling is at best a spurious way
of making sense of possibility. As human beings we derive comfort from
knowing where we are going and from reaching out to some hypothetical
point in the distance which we prefer to call a future. Maybe its best
to remember that by the time the future arrives its the moment. Therefore
all we have is a series of moments. And once again we are back to the
need for understanding the moment.
